ABOUT MARK

Mark Governor is an acclaimed composer and lyricist.  His rock musical “shAme” is in development for Broadway, with multiple Tony Award-winner Kathleen Marshall directing. The show has been produced in Los Angeles, Boston and Berlin.  Mark is also the co-founder and artistic director of the Los Angeles Rock Opera Company and is the co-composer and lyricist of the world music opera “Possession: The Legend of El Rojo.” He adapted and arranged Pete Townshendʼs “A Quick One While Heʼs Away” for stage performance and video and has several new music theater works in development. In 2021, Mark was the Music Producer for the virtual Broadway revival of “Amour” by Michelle LeGrand and Jeremy Sams.

Mark’s songs and compositions have been featured in over 250 television series, specials and documentaries, including “The Daily Show,” “Brooklyn 99,”, “Friends,” “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “No Reservations,” and in the feature films “Nebraska” (Academy Award nominee), “Sweet November,” “The Crash Pad,” and “Downsizing.”

In cinema, he has twenty feature films to his credit, including “Pet Sematary 2,” “Notes From Underground,” a collaboration with Iggy Pop on “The Brave” (directed by Johnny Depp) and the DVD Special Editions of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogies.  Mark composed and conducted a new original score for the 1927 silent film, “The Unknown,” which premiered in live performance as the opening event of the 2017 Carmel International Film Festival.

As a songwriter and record producer, he has worked with many artists including Grant Lee Phillips, Carmen Rizzo, Huun Huur Tu, Concrete Blonde, Kristian Bush (Sugarland), Katrina Lenk, James Snyder, D.J. Bonebreak (X), Billy Preston and Lolo.

Mark has received commissions for ten dance pieces from Modern Dance companies in California.  He was the subject of a video documentary on his controversial anti-war dance composition, “Peace By Piece,” which won an Emmy award in 1993. His collaboration with director/choreographer Janet Roston of “Gatsby Redux” premiered at Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles in 2018.
